What does home insurance cover?

Home insurance is not mandatory by law in Canada if your house is paid for (it is however, usually a condition to get a mortgage). But considering the financial investment that goes with home ownership, having insurance is strongly recommended. It could help pay for repairs or replace your home or your belongings if something accidental or unexpected happens, like a fire or your home gets broken into.

In general, home insurance covers your dwelling and your personal belongings. It also covers you if someone injures themselves on your property or if you accidentally damage someone else’s property or unintentionally injure them. Most policies allow you to add on extra coverage to meet your exact needs.
